I have been wanting to do something with my mother and her sisters for a long time. I finally was able to take my own picture of them together, to make some art with them as the subject. They just weren't cooperating with my requests for pictures.....
So anyhoo, I drew their likenesses in a cartoon style and painted and quilted it. I also added my grandmother and one sister who weren't present. They are no longer with us, but I still wanted to include them in "The Whitfield Girls"!
I think I have been creative since the womb, but my earliest memory was using my mother’s eye shadow to draw a vase of flowers. That was only the beginning….. From photographs, life experiences, quotes and other artists—inspiration can pop up at any moment. Fiber art allows me to combine all the media I love in a creative, yet experimental way. Thank you for joining me on my journey as I explore all the facets that this fiber art medium has to offer!

Deltas Complete!
Painting's all done!
I have finished the painting step. I decided to change some of the colors of things for more interest and variety in the characters. I am often asked why no faces? I don't know...When I did the initial sketch they had faces, but I think I like for the characters in my artworks to be anyone who views it rather than a particular person. Yes, I am capable of doing faces, but I guess this is my signature.
Now I need to quilt it.
Now I need to quilt it.
New work in progress
I am a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. However, I have been wanting to do some artworks based on historically African-American sororities in general. I have already completed a few based on my sorority, and plan to make more. However, I came across a picture of an aquaintance who is a member of Delta Sigma Theta, and asked if I could use it for an artwork. I have had this picture for about a year. I decided that it would be the subject for an artwork for an upcoming show in Atlanta: The Square Foot Pin-Up Art Show.

Only one thing left to do now!
I finally made time to finish painting one of my works in progress. All that is left now is the actual quilting. I am a little nervous about that step, but every time I work on another piece, I know it helps me to grow creatively. Here goes nothing......

I'm on a roll
I have made progress on my first quilt of the "Sisters Series". I took this picture a few weeks ago, and I have worked on it since then. Actually, inspiration has been flowing all around me lately. I have not made time to update my blog, but I have about four art quilts in the works at the moment. Hopefully I will post pics of them all soon!

In the works....
I am currently working on a quilt based on a photo that inspired me over a year ago. The first time I saw it, it truly made me think of the concept of girlfriends/sisters. It will be a whole-cloth, painted piece and it is slightly abstract, though it bears a close resemblance to the inspiration. I can't wait to post a pic of the work in progress at the end of the week. I am hoping to finish painting everything except the background.
